Reflecting on life is important, but what if it leads to discovering your sense of belonging? Dr. Ilene Winokur discovered a sense of belonging by sharing her story about life in two very different places she calls home: Buffalo, NY, and Yarmouk, Kuwait. Friends and family were curious about how she adjusted to life in two different cultures. Dr. Winokur realized that belonging was the common theme and her journey guided her to make connections between belonging, learning, and improving our well-being.

Journey to Belonging: Pathways to Well-Being is filled with self-reflection and the author’s discovery about different stages of belonging (self, personal, and professional) that can influence how educators approach teaching and learning. Dr. Winokur's research-based explanations about belonging and well-being include why our highest goal is to leave a legacy and a better future for all.

Journey to Belonging will help you define YOUR sense of belonging by answering:

  • What is self-belonging and why do we all need it?
  • Why is personal belonging an essential element of learning?
  • How can educators find their sense of professional belonging?
  • What does it mean to become a “good ancestor”?

I love how the author weaves her personal and professional experiences and learnings together into a heart felt book that is so current. This is a beautiful companion to the authors podcast. Winoker is an international educational consultant who connects with educators and students from the heart. A great read for educators, as well as anyone who connects with people from other cultures, either through their own travels or by welcoming friends from a new culture.

Dr. Winokur's book is an incredible ride through self reflection and belonging. I wrote that it's essential for teachers--but it's really meant for anyone who is examining their relationships with themselves and others. Teachers will appreciate the perspectives they gain about feelings of belonging within their students and for themselves within the field. I highly recommend this book. I'll be reading it a second time once I finishing reflecting on the first!

I’d never thought about the idea of being a “good ancestor” before I read Ilene’s educational memoir, Journey to Belonging: Pathways to Well-Being. Her unique story of growing into herself through two countries, America, and Kuwait, frames her new inner and outer world. She shares how different her roles become in her new homeland as a daughter in-law, sister in-law, wife, mother, friend and then as a teacher. With each role comes a different journey to find a sense of belonging. At age 28, Ilene leaves the United States to marry her Arab husband and move to his country, Kuwait. But not without a deeply emotional cost. Her family, the one she’s left behind in Buffalo, New York, is confused and devastated trying to understand why she’s left. We, the reader know. Ilene is searching for a sense of belonging she’s been unable to find. Deliberately starting her life over she develops an intimate relationship with her mother-in-law, her husband’s extended family, her life as a Muslim, and ultimately herself. After several years and with a solid sense of well-being, she can welcome back into her new world, her mom, dad, and siblings. Ilene’s emersion into the culture of Kuwait through a new language, customs, and a new way of being, builds her sense of self-esteem and belonging. I was intrigued how she forges a method of critical thinking based on her own self-discovery. Speaking both English and Arabic, she persuades her professional associates to test her educational curriculum. It not only succeeds, but exceeds her own expectations and confirms that her pathways to well-being can help others. She becomes an important player in Kuwait’s educational system. Ilene asks us to “leave a legacy and a better future for all”. This book leaves no doubt that each of us can.

As soon as I began reading, Journey to Belonging, I was immediately pulled in by Ilene Winokur's personal stories. The author takes the reader on an amazing journey growing up in New York without a sense of belonging to raising a family and becoming a teacher and professor in Kuwait to developing into an international speaker, blogger, podcaster, and social media leader. Through powerful storytelling and lessons learned, Ilene provides a path to wellbeing that leads to personal and professional belonging. I highly recommend this book as a must-read for anyone seeking to be who they are and to feel a sense of belonging wherever they are and whomever they are with.

Well written and easy to read book with important messages for all of us to better understand our lives and how we can improve them. I loved the author's honesty and empathic nature- it really came through and makes the lessons more powerful. Before reading this book I did not think much about belonging and how important it is. This book explains how we can find belonging and how we can make others feel like they belong. I would recommend it for anyone who is looking to better themselves and improve their relationships with those around them.

This was an interesting look at the theme of belonging through research and through the author's own life experiences. I particularly appreciated the belonging lessons and self-reflection questions at the end of each chapter. I also liked the concept of what it means to be a "good ancestor". Food for thought!
